The Shocking Truth About Oils E-mail

It’s the 21st century, and a whole generation has grown up eating a new type of food unknown to their parents and grandparents – vegetable oils, high in a kind of oil called Omega 6. Before the 1960’s you could not even buy them in Ireland – then they were suddenly everywhere, for frying, baking, salad dressing, chips, and fish. No longer was fish fried in lard, no longer were cakes made with suet. Animal fats (containing little omega 6) were out and vegetable oils were in.

At the same time another change occurred in the food people ate. The wild rabbit which was a popular Sunday dish was displaced by ever-cheaper mass-farmed chicken. This chicken was - and is – fed on cereal grain- and soy-based food, with additives such as antibiotics. The young grass-reared beef that Dublin in particular was famous for was displaced by beef reared on large amounts of grain and soy- based feed. The fishman who used call around twice a week on Wednesday and Friday went out of business, and the Irish dropped regular fish-eating.

Rabbits and grass-fed beef however have a natural diet containing a completely different type of oil – Omega 3. Omega 3 is abundant in wild game and grass-fed animals, and especially abundant in fish. The diet of 50 years ago had a ratio of Omega 6 (bad) to Omega 3 (good) of about 1:1; today it has gone to about 15:1.

INFLAMMATION AND DISEASE
Why the fuss? Well, Omega 6 (bad) oils – which are mainly bad because we take too much of them – promote INFLAMMATION throughout your body, while Omega 3 oils restrain it. Inflammation attacks especially your brain and nervous system, but also your heart and arteries and glands, and is largely responsible for most of the common “illnesses of aging” we see today up to and including Alzheimer’s disease – now affecting many more people and at a younger age. It is even implicated in illnesses that strike children – ADD/ADHD, behaviour / learning difficulties, and asthma for example.

You can alter the course of diseases just by changing this around in the diet. For instance, at a ratio of 10:1 in the diet – you have asthma or psoriasis; at 5:1 – it improves; get to 1:1 – you find the condition is just not there.

Quenching the fires of inflammation with extra omega-3 also seems to greatly help concentration, memory and drive, even in “normal” people.

TO MAKE A CHANGE
Omega 6 (bad) oils are stored in the body and to make a change you should both eliminate Omega 6 oils such as sunflower, safflower, soy and corn oils, while taking a high-potency fish oil supplement providing at least 60% EPA-DHA (active Omega 3 oils). Cod liver oil is not ideal as it is only 7% EPA-DHA. You then need to take about 2.4g EPA-DHA daily for a month, to help restore the proper 3-6 balance. The fish oil supplement should also preferably be encapsulated as once opened, liquid oils go off very quickly.
